    A battery energy storage system, or BESS, is a battery bank combined with a power conversion system and an energy management system, able to charge and discharge on command to shave peaks, back up loads, and firm renewable generation. EXBATT delivers cabinet and containerised BESS turnkey in the Western Balkans, from feasibility and grid application through commissioning and long term service.

    What size BESS does a site need?
    Two numbers decide it: power in kilowatts, set by the largest peak to be shaved or the load to be carried, and energy in kilowatt hours, set by how long that must last. Efficiency losses and end of life capacity are added on top, usually 10 to 20 percent.
    How long does a BESS last?
    Lithium iron phosphate cells are typically warranted for 6000 cycles or 10 to 15 years to 70 or 80 percent of original capacity. Inverters and cooling are shorter lived and are treated as serviceable items in the maintenance plan.
    Can a BESS replace a generator?
    For short outages, yes, and without transfer delay or fuel. For outages measured in many hours or days, a generator still carries the energy, while the BESS covers the transition and reduces generator run time.
