The modern alternative is UPS plus BESS, which removes fuel, emissions, and noise, and pays back part of the investment through demand charge reduction. - Does a generator need a UPS as well?
- For IT, medical, and process loads yes, because the 10 to 30 second start delay is long enough to drop everything. A UPS bridges that gap and also filters the generator's own voltage transients.
- Which has the lowest total cost?
- It depends on outage frequency and tariff. Where outages are rare and there is a demand charge, a BESS often wins because it earns between events. Where outages are long, a generator is cheaper per hour of coverage.
