AGM vs GEL: choosing a VRLA battery
AGM and GEL are both valve regulated lead acid batteries. AGM holds the electrolyte in a glass mat and delivers higher current, which suits UPS standby. GEL immobilises the electrolyte in silica and tolerates deeper cycling and higher temperatures, which suits solar, telecom in hot sites, and any application with regular discharges.
Both are sealed, both are maintenance free in the watering sense, and they are not interchangeable. The difference shows up in year four, not week one.

Charging is not the same
GEL requires a lower charge voltage than AGM and is damaged by the higher boost settings AGM tolerates. If a charger or UPS is set for AGM and the string is GEL, the battery dries out and fails early. Always set the charger profile to the chemistry actually installed, and apply temperature compensation.
The decision in one line
If the battery mostly floats and must deliver a hard, short discharge, choose AGM. If it discharges regularly, sits in a warm or uncooled room, or supports a solar system, choose GEL. If it does both heavily, look at OPzV or lithium instead.

- No. They need different charge voltages, so one chemistry is always mistreated. Strings must be a single type, single manufacturer, and ideally a single production batch.
- Is GEL always longer lasting?
- In cycling and warm conditions, yes. In a cool room on pure float duty, a high grade AGM can match or exceed it while costing less and recharging faster.
- Do sealed batteries need ventilation?
- Yes, less than flooded types but not zero. They vent under fault or overcharge, and more importantly ventilation removes heat, which is the main driver of lead acid ageing.
